After measuring the circumference of the top of the petticoat (about 60 cm), where the flounce will be, I cut two 90 cm widths of white percale and joined them together to form a circle for the flounce, so about 1m80, or three times the circumference.
I hemmed one side, and on the other I threaded three gathers after over-stitching all the way round the ruffle and making a fold.
Then I prepared the strip of broderie anglaise that is to adorn the bottom of the flounce. I had to shorten it by cutting off three centimetres and hemming it all the way round.
I positioned and basted this strip on the steering wheel
and here I am fixing it with a very fine hem stitch.
As of today, I'm about halfway through, i.e. about 90 cm by 1m80! Maybe I'm being too meticulous (manic?) but my main aim is to hem with the smallest stitches possible. That's why it takes me so long.
Next step and not the least: tightening the gathering threads and attaching the flounce to the petticoat itself. It's not going to be easy because the crinoline part is quite stiff, which could make my job a lot harder. But I'll find a trick to make it easier!
